Role: Learning Mentor

Location: Plymouth 

Contract: Full time

Working hours: Monday - Friday, 08:30 - 15:30, term time only

Salary: £14.45 - £15.20 per hour

Are you passionate about making a real difference in the lives of young people, particularly those who may have not had the best start in life? Do you have experience working with vulnerable individuals with additional needs? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for a Learning Mentor to provide dedicated support to students who face challenges in mainstream or special school settings.

About the school:

This specialist provision supports students who have been excluded from school or at risk of exclusion. The school supports both primary and secondary aged students, so we have opportunities for both cohorts. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on core subjects, while also offering alternative learning experiences, including vocational training and outdoor education opportunities.

About the role:

As a Learning Mentor, you’ll provide 1:1 support, helping students engage in their education and develop essential life skills. Your role will involve:

• Supporting students with both academic learning and their social-emotional development 
• Encouraging engagement in personalised timetables, which may include offsite activities such as visits to farms, sports centres, or museums.
• Promoting a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel valued and understood.
• Managing behaviour effectively, using a positive and restorative approach tailored to individual needs.
• Working closely with staff and external professionals to support students in line with their Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs).

About you:

We welcome applications from individuals with a variety of backgrounds. You may have experience as a teaching assistant, youth worker, support worker, sports coach or similar role. Above all, we are looking for someone who is:

• Able to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families
• Adaptable and flexible—no two days are the same!
• Confident in engaging students in learning through creative and practical approaches
• Committed to safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of all students

A full UK driving licence and access to a car is essential, as the role involves transporting students to offsite activities.
