About Job:

The Trainee Pattern Designer & Sewing Specialist will work closely with our Pattern Designer and in doing so, support the design and product development team in creating, refining, digitising, and iterating on sewing patterns. This role combines technical patternmaking, design iteration, and skilled sewing responsibilities to ensure the development of high-quality prototypes and patterns that align with creative and functional objectives. Additionally, the individual will work on both manual and digital patternmaking while contributing to the refinement of designs through collaborative feedback and adjustments.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

Pattern Development and Refinement

Assist in the development of new sewing patterns, both manually and digitally.
Participate in pattern revisions to align with design specifications and functionality.
Contribute to fit sessions, documenting adjustments and making necessary pattern refinements.
Digitally refine hand-drawn patterns, ensuring accuracy in measurements and specifications.
Maintain an organised library of digital patterns and ensure all files are production-read
Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, including pattern instructions, construction notes, and grading details.
Organise and archive patterns, templates, and related materials for future reference, including both physical and digital assets

Design Iteration

Work collaboratively with the design team to refine initial concepts into practical and manufacturable designs.
Provide input on construction methods and material selection to optimise design feasibility.
Test and iterate on designs by creating prototypes and samples, identifying areas for improvement in fit, construction, and overall design.
Document and track changes during the iteration process, ensuring clarity and alignment across teams.

Sewing and day-to-day production activity

Perform skilled sewing tasks to produce high-quality components and products.
Test new patterns for custom solutions by constructing to assess fit, design accuracy, and ease of assembly.
Proactively identify construction challenges during sewing and propose solutions to improve patterns and designs.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

Essential:

Skilled in sewing with a strong focus on quality and detail.
Basic understanding of pattern-making techniques.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn digital pattern-making tools
Ability to contribute to design refinement through iterative feedback and testing.
Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to adapt to technical challenges.
Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Desirable:

Experience with pattern digitisation and digital drafting software.
Background in furniture, textiles, or related fields (academic or practical experience).
Understanding of furniture and production processes.
