About you

Ideally you will be a fit and enthusiastic team player with a knowledge of working in a maritime environment. Essential to the role is the confidence to communicate with the public and work unsupervised when necessary. You must be able to handle small craft afloat, drive a variety of road vehicles and plant, have experience of groundworks, manual work and be able to use hand tools. Primarily outdoor working, sometimes in poor weather.

About the role

The role involves maintaining the waterways of Exeter, both the river Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal. Canal bank repairs, the locking in and out of vessels to the canal, moving vessels on the water answering questions from boat owners and advising users on navigation is all part of the job. The role also involves assisting with craning work, organising the mooring of boats, securing ropes and carrying out basic safety checks along the canal.

About the team

The team are a hardworking and dedicated across the river Exe and the Ship Canal. Waterways are part of the wider Environment & City Management directorate within Exeter City Council. There are ten in the team and they all work together maintaining the canal and navigation through the river for the use of the wider community.
