Have you ever considered an 'outdoorsy' job?

As the summer seems well behind us now, we're wondering what it's like to work outside all year round...

Well, who said work has to mean sitting behind a static desk in a stuffy office? If you're lucky enough to have a job that takes you outdoors, you might feel like you're already winning at life. From hiking trails to farmers'-market-life, construction sites, and beyond - there's a whole world of outdoor work opportunities waiting for you. And being able to do that in Devon, could just be the cherry on the cake.

The perks of outdoor work:

  • Vitamin D boost: Remove those pricey supplements from your basket and soak up some sunshine while you work to get your daily dose of vitamin D. According to the NHS, vitamin D regulates the amount of calcium and phosphate in our body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy. Some studies suggest that vitamin D may help to protect us from infections and even major diseases like cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes and dementia.
  • Fresh air: Breathe in that crisp, clean air and say goodbye to stuffy offices. Fresh air not only cleans your lungs, it can also boost your mood, lower your heart rate, and increase energy levels! Yep, there's much positivity for connecting with the outdoors world and being with nature.
  • Stress relief: Being outdoors can help reduce stress and improve your mood, in turn improving your mental wellbeing. Here's what Mind - a charity fighting for the mental health of people in England and Wales - has to say.
  • Physical activity: Many outdoor jobs involve physical activity, which can keep you fit and healthy. It's largely recognised that physical activity helps us to achieve a healthy weight, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it can improve mood, sleep, and concentration.
  • Unique experiences: Working outdoors often means experiencing nature firsthand. You might see some amazing wildlife, hike stunning trails, or even work on a farm and all the animal-life that brings.

Challenges and tips:

  • Weather: We know all about that in Devon, right? Be prepared for all kinds of weather. From scorching heat to freezing cold, and everything in between, you'll need to be adaptable. Whilst it might be most enjoyable working outdoors in the British summer (when it's not raining that is), the likelihood is that you'll be outside through the winter too, which is going to require a little more thought, and a few more layers!
  • Safety: Always prioritise safety. Wear appropriate protective gear and follow safety guidelines whenever you need to, whatever it is that you're doing. If you're not self-employed, then your employer is expected to provide the relevant H&S equipment for you.
  • Sun protection: Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. It's easy to forget (especially at the moment) that we can have very hot days and you'll need to be prepared for that.
  • Hydration: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially on those hot days. It's recommended that you take in 2 litres per day, but that should be even more when the weather's hot.

Outdoor jobs to consider:

  • Landscaping: Gardening, tree trimming, and lawn care are all great outdoor jobs.
  • Construction: From building homes to working on infrastructure projects, there are plenty of outdoor construction jobs available.
  • Farming: If you love the great outdoors and working with animals, consider a career in farming.
  • Outdoor recreation: Become a ranger, hiking guide, or outdoor educator.
  • Environmental science: Work in conservation, marine biology, wildlife management, or environmental research.

So, if you're tired of the same old nine-to-five routine, why not consider a career outdoors? It's a great way to enjoy the fresh air, stay active, keep positive, get healthy, and (hopefully) have a lot of fun!
