Back to school blues: Lessons from the workplace

Published on 05/09/2024

A quick blog post today as work is BUSY! But summer's over (did we have a summer?), and it's back to the grind as the kids go back to school this week. But hey, it's not just the 'little ones' who can feel the back-to-school blues. Adults can relate - especially those who've been on extended leave and gotten used to sleeping in and binge-watching Netflix.

Here are a few workplace tips inspired by the school year:

  • Structured schedule: Remember those school bells? They kept us on track. Do you have a routine at work? A little structure can go a long way in boosting productivity. For example, you could plan your day in advance, use a to-do list, set specific work hours, and take regular breaks.
  • Snack attack: Just like kids need energy for learning, adults need fuel for the afternoon slump. Keep healthy snacks handy to avoid those energy crashes.
  • Group projects: School taught us the importance of teamwork. Collaborate with colleagues on projects and share ideas. It's a great way to learn, stay motivated, and build relationships.
  • Take breaks: Everyone needs timeout. Don't forget to take short breaks throughout the day. Step away from your desk, stretch, walk, or chat with a coworker. A little downtime can help you stay focused and refreshed.

So, for those sending kids back to school, remember that you're not alone in feeling a bit overwhelmed. By applying a few tips, you can make the transition back to work a little less stressful and a lot more fun.
